Born on the 25th June 1991 in Kenya, Victor Wanyama is an accomplished footballer known primarily for his role as a central defensive midfielder, currently plying his trade for CF Montreal. A physically imposing figure at 6ft tall (1.84m) and weighing in at 13st 9lb (87kg), Wanyama dons the number 2 jersey and is a force on the pitch.
Wanyama started his professional career with Belgian outfit, Beerschot AC in the Vierde Klasse in 2008, where, despite a slow start, he went on to make a significant impact over a three year period. A single first team appearance in his inaugural season paved the way for eighteen league appearances collectively in the subsequent two seasons, during which he managed to score one goal.
A move in July 2011 saw Wanyama join Celtic in Scotland's Premiership for a modest fee of £900k. The Kenyan midfielder flourished during his time in Glasgow, with his two-season stint marked by a commendable tally of ten goals from 61 league appearances. His imposing presence and ability to control the game from the heart of the pitch made him a firm fan favourite among the Celtic faithful.
The 2013 season marked another significant career move for Wanyama as he switched Scottish football for the splendour of the English Premier League, joining Southampton for a fee of around £13m. Over a period of three seasons, the Kenyan international made 85 first team appearances and found the back of the net on four occasions.
Wanyama's prowess didn't go unnoticed, with a move to Tottenham Hotspur for £11m coming in July 2016. Despite injuries hampering his time at the North London club, Wanyama managed to make a decent contribution with six goals from 68 league appearances over four seasons.
In March 2020, Wanyama left the English Premier League for the American MLS, signing for CF Montreal. Despite the change in surroundings, his performances remained consistent, with five goals bagged over 117 league appearances at the time of writing. His recent participations indicate his continued status as a key figure in the squad, with four starts and eight appearances as a substitute in the 2024 MLS season.
Throughout his journey, Victor Wanyama has also represented his home country, Kenya, at the international level, showcasing his consummate skills on the world stage.
