Hyeongyu Oh, born on the 12th of April 2001, is a Korean forward most renowned for his stint at Celtic and his current role at Genk. Standing at six feet tall (1.85m) and weighing thirteen stone (83kg), Oh sports the number 19 shirt. His career kicked off proper in January 2014, when he joined Suwon Samsung Bluewings in the K League 2. His debut season in 2019 saw him make 11 first team appearances in league matches, and his performance solidified in the seasons to follow, with a particularly strong showing in 2022 where he chalked up 36 appearances and scored 13 goals.
In a surprising twist, Oh was transferred on loan to Gimcheon Sangmu in the K League 1 in May 2020. Here, he proved himself a valuable asset, with five first team appearances and two goals in his inaugural season. His following year was even more productive with 33 appearances and five league goals. However, at the end of his loan in November 2021, he returned to Suwon Samsung Bluewings. His time back with Suwon saw him replicating his earlier success with 36 appearances and 13 goals in the 2022 season.
Come January 2023, Oh found himself on the move again - this time heading to Scottish giants Celtic for a fee of roughly £2.5m. In his closely watched first season at Celtic, Oh made 16 first team appearances and netted the ball six times. He replicated this form in his second season with 20 appearances and five goals. Despite an increasingly promising start, Oh's time at Celtic was peppered with both moments of brilliance and periods of plateau, the tumultuous journey eventual culminating in his transfer to Genk in the Belgian Pro League for around £2.3m.
Today, he continues his professional journey at Genk, where he has so far made eight first team appearances in the current season and scored three goals. Whether the future holds further twists and turns for Oh remains to be seen. What we can be certain of, however, is that his time at Celtic was a chapter Celtic fans won't forget anytime soon.
