Maryan Shved, born on the 16th of July 1997, is a Ukrainian footballer who currently plays forward as a right winger for Shakhtar Donetsk. Born and bred in Ukraine, Shved is a rather compact player, standing at 5ft 7in tall (approx. 1.71m) and weighing 9st 12lb (around 63kg). On the field, he's easy to spot in his Number 9 jersey.
Shved began his professional career at Karpaty Lviv in the Premier League of Ukraine. In August 2015, the young talent was transferred from Karpaty Lviv to Sevilla Atlético in Spain's Second Division B/1, for a fee rounded to about £900k. His time with Sevilla Atlético was notably limited, with only one first team appearance during the 2015 - 16 season and none in the following year.
Shved returned to Karpaty Lviv in August 2017 for an undisclosed fee. His performance began to shine upon his return, making ten first team appearances and scoring two goals in his debut season. Over the following seasons, Shved developed his skill and form, leading to him securing 24 first team appearances and managing to net 14 goals in the 2018-19 season.
In July 2019, Scottish giants Celtic took note of Shved's performance and secured his services for a hefty fee of around £1.8 million. However, his stint with Celtic was less than noteworthy, with Shved only making one first team appearance in the 2019 - 2020 season.
Unsurprisingly, Celtc decided to loan Shved out in August 2020. The forward moved to Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League, where he made 17 first team appearances and scored three goals in his premiere season. Whilst he stayed on loan for the following seasons, Shved's performance remained steady with a respectable tally of goals and appearances.
In a somewhat expected move, Celtic transferred Shved permanently to Mechelen in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee. Shved continued to play for Mechelen for a couple more seasons, maintaining a steady performance.
In September 2022, Shved was transferred from Mechelen to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Premier League of Ukraine for a cool fee of around £900k. As of the current 2024 - 2025 season, Shved has already made two first team appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk. The versatile player also participated in the 2023 - 2024 Champions League and Europa League for Shakhtar Donetsk with two and one substitute appearances respectively.
While Shved's time playing for Celtic was brief and largely unremarkable, his career trajectory does highlight the strong scouting network Celtic harbours, to discover and procure talent such as his from far-flung leagues.
