Richie Towell, born on 17 July 1991 in the Republic of Ireland, is best known for his central midfield role for Shamrock Rovers. Standing at 5ft 8in (1.73m) and weighing 10st 7lb (67kg), Towell began his professional career at Celtic in 2010.
Initially arriving at Celtic in July of 2010 as a trainee, he got off to a fairly unremarkable start, with merely one first team appearance in league matches during the 2010-2011 season. In January 2011, Towell was loaned out to Hibernian, remaining in the Scottish Premiership. Here, he made 16 first team appearances in league matches firstly, and then 14 in the following season. He also managed to net his first league goal during this period.
In January 2013, we saw Towell's departure from Celtic, heading over to Dundalk in the Premier Division in the Republic of Ireland. It is here that his career experienced an upswing with 31 appearances and seven goals in his first season. This promising performance continued with a steady increase in goal hauls in subsequent seasons. During the 2015 season, Towell made 32 appearances, scoring an impressive 25 league goals.
After his period in Dundalk, Towell moved across the sea to Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League, in January 2016. This stint didn't provide Towell with much face time, where he made only one first team appearance in league matches of 2016-2017 season. From Brighton, he was sent on loan to Rotherham United in England's League One, from August 2017. Over two seasons with Rotherham, he again showed his ability on the pitch, scoring six goals over 57 first team appearances.
In July 2019, Towell moved from Brighton & Hove Albion to Salford City in the English League Two. This was swiftly followed by a transfer back to his home country, with Towell signing for Shamrock Rovers in the Premier Division two years later in July 2021. Currently in his third season with Shamrock, Towell has since clocked up an impressive 85 first team appearances and scored 9 league goals, contributing to the Rovers' on-pitch efforts in the 2021, 2022, and ongoing 2024 seasons.
More recently, Towell has proved instrumental in Shamrock Rovers' European campaigns. He played in the Europa League Qualifiers 2024-2025 with one start and one appearance as a substitute, and had similar involvement in the Champions League Qualifiers 2024-2025. Towell also featured in the FAI Cup in 2024, commencing with one start, and also contributed to the Conference League 2024-2025 efforts, by making one appearance as a substitute.
