Born on the 30th of May 1994, Vasilis Barkas is a Netherlands born goalkeeper who currently plays for FC Utrecht. Standing at 6ft 5in (1.96m) and weighing 13st 5lb (85kg), Barkas inherits the number 1 jersey.
Barkas started his career at Atromitos in the Super League in Greece as a trainee in July 2006. The 2015-2016 season marked his debut, during which he made 12 initial appearances in league matches.
In July 2016, Barkas took a step up transferring from Atromitos to AEK Athens in the Super League in Greece for a fee of roundabout £450k. A greater responsibility fell on his shoulders during his time in AEK Athens, as he made 20 first team appearances in his initial 2016-2017 season. He went on to play in five first team matches in 2017-2018, 26 in the 2018-2019 season, and later on exalted in 28 appearances in the 2019-2020 season.
The larger stage awaited, as Barkas took the leap to Celtic in the Premiership in Scotland for a fee of approximately £5m in July 2020. He marked his stay with 15 first team appearances in the 2020-2021 season at Celtic. However, the following 2021-2022 season was rather calm, with Barkas making only one first team appearance.
In July 2022, Barkas was signed on loan from Celtic in the Premiership in Scotland to FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie in Netherlands. He made substantial progress at Utrecht, playing 32 matches in the 2022-2023 season, 29 in the following 2023-2024 season, and has already played seven matches in the current 2024-2025 season.
Barkas then permanently transferred from Celtic in the Premiership in Scotland to FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie in Netherlands in July 2023. Again, he made significant contributions to the team, with 32 appearances in the 2022-2023 season, 29 in the 2023-2024 season, and seven thus far in the current 2024-2025 term.
It is also worth noting that Barkas started in two Eredivisie Europa Play-offs 2023 - 2024 for FC Utrecht, proving that he was no stranger to high-pressure matches.
Ultimately, Barkas has demonstrated his worth in each of the leagues he has played, leaving considerable impressions across Greece, Scotland, and the Netherlands.
