Eoghan O’Connell, born on 13 August 1995 in Rep. Ireland, is a footballer who excels as a central defender. Currently plying his trade at Wrexham, he stands tall in the number 5 jersey at 6ft 2in (1.88m) and weighs in at 12st 8lb (80kg).
In July of 2013, O’Connell made the prestigious move to the Scottish Premiership, joining Celtic. His first season (2013-14) was one of acclimatisation, with O’Connell making only one first team appearance in league matches. Over the subsequent three seasons, O’Connell persevered, earning another 6 first team appearances as he sought to impress at Celtic.
As part of his development, the Celtic outfit decided to send O'Connell out on loan to various clubs. His first loan spell was at Oldham Athletic in the English National League in September 2015 where he made two appearances in the first team. This was followed by a transitory spell at Cork City in the Republic of Ireland (2016), where O’Connell began to demonstrate his scoring potential with a goal in his seven league appearances.
Returning to Celtic in April 2016, he continued his journey of growth amassing a few more league appearances and proving his mettle as a steadfast defender. His time at Celtic ended with another loan spell, this time at League Two side, Walsall in England in January 2017. This spell proved highly successful, with O’Connell making 17 first team appearances and scoring once.
After a four-year association with Celtic, O’Connell transferred to Bury in the Lower Leagues of England in July 2017. He had a short stint of a season there, making 12 first team appearances in league matches. After two years, in July 2019, he moved to Rochdale in the English National League.
Since then, O'Connell has had a few more chapters in his career, with transfers to Charlton Athletic in 2022, where he managed 19 first team appearances and a single goal, and then another move to Wrexham in the League One in England in January 2023 for an undisclosed fee. His time at Wrexham has so far seen him getting substantial playing time, with an impressive 16 first team appearances and a goal in the season and a half he has been there. He also helped the team in their FA Cup 2023-2024 campaign, starting in one match.
