A reminisce of his career tells us that back in February 2009, Carey bid farewell to Celtic in Scotland’s Premiership to embark on a loan stint with Bohemian FC in Ireland. It was his debut season with Bohemian FC and Carey offered a promising start with 15 first team appearances and two goals. The following year he was on the move again, this time to St Mirren on loan back in the Scottish Premiership. It was there, over three seasons, that Carey made his presence felt in 70 league matches and netted six goals.
Another loan move followed in July 2010 with Carey moving southwards to Huddersfield Town in England's League One where he featured in 19 league matches and scored two goals. The Celtic link was finally severed in 2011 when he was transferred to St Mirren on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee. Over the next three seasons with St Mirren, Carey appeared in 70 Premier League matches, netting six goals in the process.
His journey in Scotland continued with a move to Ross County, where he spent two seasons and contributed five goals in 58 league appearances. Carey then moved to England's Championship, signing for Plymouth Argyle in July 2015. It was here he enjoyed some of his most productive football in terms of goal output, with 32 goals from his 110 league appearances during his tenure with Plymouth.
After four seasons, Carey sought something a bit different, moving to Bulgaria's CSKA Sofia in 2019. Over three seasons, he contributed five goals from 68 league appearances. July 2022 saw him return home to familiar grounds, signing for St Johnstone in the Scotland's Premiership. Thus far, he has made 73 appearances and scored five goals over two and a bit seasons.
Not to be overlooked, Carey also showed his worth in Cup games. Notably, during the 2024 - 2025 season for St Johnstone, he scored one goal from four starts in the League Cup and made a start in the Scottish Cup 2023 - 2024 season.
It's clear Carey’s journey is far from over, and it will be intriguing to see what future performances will be added to the legacy of this stalwart of football; a journey that began at Celtic and still echoes in Scottish Football.
