Kieran Dowell, a player barely past his mid-twenties, at the ripe old age of 27, wouldn't normally snag your eye if you happened to be browsing a football magazine. The lad was born on 10 October 1997, in the green and pleasant land of England. Measuring a lanky 1.86m (6ft 1in) and a reasonable 70kg (11st) in mass, he wears the number 20 jersey for Rangers, while we suppress the urge to discuss that particular gamut of things related to the 'Old Firm' pre-2013. That said, young Dowell wiles away his time in the midfield, presumably enjoying the Scottish weather.
Our Mr Dowell spent the initial stage of his career at Everton, having joined as a trainee way back in July 2014, where he made a staggering two first team appearances in league matches during his debut season, 2015 - 2016. Then followed a journeyman phase of his career, with loans to Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Derby County and Wigan Athletic, where he showcased his uncanny ability to occasionally put a football into a net.
A chapter of Dowell's career came to an end with a relatively insignificant transfer fee of £2m. He ditched the Toffees for Norwich City in July 2020 upon where he scored a resounding 11 goals spread over three seasons. A statistic likely to put fear into the hearts of second division goalies nationwide.
By July 2023, old boy Dowell had decided to take his talent to the Premiership in Scotland, signing for Rangers – a move that I'm sure sent tremors of impending doom echoing across Celtic Park. His tenure with Rangers so far has been marked with a similar level of zest and dynamism as at his previous clubs, making a total of 23 first team appearances in league matches - an exhausting workload indeed.
Dowell has also had the honour of taking part in some key Rangers fixtures; the League Cup 2024 - 2025 for example, where he graced the field for exactly one start and one appearance as a substitute. A standout achievement, it's worth noting that he repeated this feat in both the Champions League Qualifiers 2024 - 2025 and Europa League 2024 - 2025. Impressive right? Thank goodness there wasn't a royal around to see it.
