Sammie Szmodics, an English midfielder born on the 24th of September 1995, currently hones his midfielding craft for Ipswich Town, where he plays as a central attacking midfielder. Standing at 5ft 6in (1.68m), and weighing approximately 10st 7lb (67kg), Szmodics dons the number 23 jersey. Besides his club career, he has also had the honour of representing the Republic of Ireland at national level.
His career began in September 2013, when he officially joined Colchester United, playing in League Two in England. During his debut season in 2013/14, Szmodics featured in seven league matches. This number grew over the years, reaching a peak in the 2017/18 season where he scored 12 goals from 22 appearances. During his time with Colchester United, Szmodics had a brief loan spell at Braintree Town in the National League in England, where he found the net twice in only three appearances.
In July 2019, Szmodics moved upward, transferring from Colchester United to Bristol City in the English Championship, with a transfer fee of approximately £750,000. While there, however, he saw action in just three league matches in the 2019/2020 season.
January 2020 saw Szmodics transferred on loan to Peterborough United in League One. However, in September 2020, he made a permanent move to the team, this time for around £940,000. Szmodics came alive at Peterborough United, with an impressive 36 appearances and six goals in the 2021/22 season, and a solid one appearance in the 2022/23 season.
Blackburn Rovers, playing in the Championship, became Szmodics' next destination in August 2022, for a price tag of around £1.7 million. His stint with Blackburn Rovers was characterized by his exceptional 2023/2024 season, where he scored 27 goals in 44 appearances.
His most recent transition in August 2024 took him away from the Championship and to Ipswich Town in the Premier League, with a substantial move costing around £10 million. At Ipswich Town, he has started the current season with seven appearances and already one goal to his name.
Also of note is his performance at an international level. Szmodics has recently represented the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League 2024/2025, with four starts to his name.
