The midfielder joined from Hibernian in May 2007 in the biggest ever transfer between two Scottish clubs. He made a total of 142 appearances for Hibernian in five years as a first team player, scoring 21 goals and helping them win the Scottish League Cup in 2007.
It was Gordon Strachan who brought Brown down the M8 and made him a Celtic regular, pushing him into a more central midfield role in what was a slight change to his time at Hibernian where he was used to playing off of the strikers.
But Brown adapted to the new position and began to establish himself in the Hoops. Tony Mowbray handed the Scotland internationalist the captain’s armband following the departure of Stephen McManus in January 2010. But it was during his first season under Neil Lennon where Brown stamped his authority on the new-look squad.
Known for his drive, determination and passion on the pitch, he is one of the most valuable players in the current squad and has captained the team to four league titles in a row, as well as to a league and cup double in the season 2012/13.
Brown suffered a hamstring injury in 2014 in a pre-season friendly match against Rapid Vienna. He scored a goal in his first full game after injury, a 2-2 draw in a Europa League group match against FC Red Bull Salzburg. In November 2014, Brown signed a 4-year contract extension keeping him at the Parkhead club until 2018.
