Anthony 'Tony' Watt, a bona fide son of Scotland, born on December 29th, 1993, is a professional footballer who can be seen spearheading the attack for Motherwell. Standing at a sturdy 5ft 11in (1.82m), and weighing in at a solid 13st 12lb (88kg), Watt lends a physical presence to Motherwell's front line. The prominent number 52 is emblazoned on his back. Currently, his market value is roughly £340,000 according to Transfermarkt, and his current contract with The Steelmen is set to end in late May 2025.
Tony’s career began in earnest with the Scottish Championship side Airdrieonians in July 2010. He managed to get his name on the scoresheet three times in 15 appearances before earning a move to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership in January 2011 for a fee close to £100,000.
Watt’s time at Celtic is worthy of extra detail, not least because it shaped much of his footballing narrative. 2011 - 2012 marked his first season with The Bhoys, wherein he played three league matches and scored two goals. In the 2012 - 2013 season at Celtic, he increased his tally with 20 appearances and five goals, dotting his name further into Hoops history. During the 2013 - 2014 season, Watt only managed 2 appearances without leaving his mark on the score sheet.
An opportunity for further development arose as he was loaned out to Lierse SK in Belgium's third division in August of 2013. There, Watt found the back of the net eight times in just 17 appearances. His talent didn’t go unnoticed, leading to a permanent move to Belgium with Standard Liege in July 2014 for a sum of £1.2m.
After relatively quieter spells at Standard Liege and Charlton Athletic, where he tallied four goals across 49 league appearances with both clubs, Watt made a brief loan move to Cardiff City in November 2015. He netted twice in nine matches before briefly returning to Charlton and then heading out on loan again, this time to Blackburn Rovers. Watt’s nomadic career continued with short stints at Hearts, Oud-Heverlee Leuven, and St Johnstone, before moving to Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia in July 2019.
In February 2020, Watt returned to Scotland with a move to Motherwell. His current stint with The Steelmen has seen him score 13 goals in 69 league appearances, while his brief sojourn to Dundee United in between—where he scored 18 goals in 70 matches—helped him to further establish a name in Scottish Premiership. He also had a brief spell at St Mirren on loan during the 2022 - 2023 season.
Watt, despite his footballing odyssey across multiple countries and leagues, has remained a consistent figure on the pitch irrespective of the colour of his shirt. A participant in the 2024 - 2025 League Cup for Motherwell, Tony’s commitment to the game is as steadfast as ever.
