Vaclav Cerny, a Czech national born on 17th October 1997, comes upon our radar as a sprightly 27-year-old forward, currently donning the jersey number 18 for the Rangers. Surveying his lanky 5ft 10in (1.78m) figure, one might wonder how his mere 10st 9lb (68kg) frame holds its own in the rigours of Scottish football. Managing to have represented his national side, it seems old Vaclav isn't just knocking about for the fun of it.
Mirroring a desire to bank on this individual's talents, Transfermarkt places the lad's market value around a modest £7m, give or take half a mil. In the turbulent world of football contracts, poor Vaclav only has six months left with the Rangers, winding down on 30 June 2025.
Does anyone remember his illustrious journey from 1. FK Příbram in the Czech Republic to the dutch powerhouse, Ajax, back in January 2014? A sweeping £650k was shelled out to acquire his services. The lad had a busy few seasons at Ajax, making sporadic appearances here and there. Despite the erratic nature, he had an knack for popping up with a goal - just the one, mind you.
In July 2019, he decided to take his talents to FC Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie, all for a princely sum of £680k. After a short stint, he found himself travelling to FC Twente, still in the Eredivisie, on loan. It seemed to suit him. Goals flowed more freely, and he eventually joined FC Twente permanently in 2021 for £860k. He would go on to make a notable impact over the next seasons with a decent haul of goals to his name.
Then came the bigger move to the German Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg, in 2023, for a not insubstantial sum of £7.7m. Here he kept up his reputation as a occasional goal scorer. Fast forward to July 2024, he finds himself plucked and planted wholesale in our beloved land, in the Premiership, with Rangers - still on loan mind you.
In the current 2024 - 2025 season with Rangers, Vaclav has prodded in seven goals in 18 appearances - a half decent return for a forward. He's also totted up a few starts in other competitions like the League Cup, Euro 2024, Euro Qualifiers, and even the Europa League. All in all, Vaclav Cerny, not a Celtic man per se, but just another wanderer in the grand old game of football.
