Vaclav Cerny, a well-seasoned journeyman of the beautiful game, was born in the Czech Republic on 17 October 1997, making him a rather seasoned 27-year-old. A forward by trade, he's best known for his exploits on the right wing, currently plying his trade for the illustrious Wolfsburg. The lad stands 5ft 10in tall (1.78m for the metrically-minded), tipping the scales at 10st 9lb (68kg).
His market value currently hovers around the £7.5m mark, according to those astute folks at Transfermarkt. And would you believe it, he's soon to be a free agent, with his contract with Wolfsburg waving its final goodbyes on 30 June 2025.
A product of the 1. FK Příbram youth system, Cerny set sail for brighter shores in January 2014. Packing his bags and crossing borders, he joined the esteemed Ajax for a mere £650k. A worthwhile investment, indeed. After a few seasons of limited playtime, he trotted over to FC Utrecht for a similarly modest £680k in July 2019.
From Utrecht, our rover found a warm welcome at FC Twente, where he found a bit more joy. A pleasant surprise, really. The club must have appreciated his contribution, making his loan move permanent for approximately £860k. A year later, Mr Cerny caught the attention of Bundesliga mainstay, Wolfsburg, who swooped in with their persuasive £7.7m.
Our lad then decided to seek his fortune on foreign soil yet again, this time embarking on a loan spell with the Rangers in the 2024-2025 season. Sporting the Rangers' garb, he made 33 appearances and netted a respectable tally of 12 goals. Sadly, there were no green and white hoops for Cerny in Scotland.
In 2025, he dutifully redeemed his return ticket back to Wolfsburg, though it seems the enthusiastic ball-kicking has been somewhat thwarted in the current season, as he hasn’t made a first team appearance just yet.
But let us not forget his efforts at the international stage. Cerny also has a few caps for Czech Rep., having represented his ancestors in the Euro Qualifiers and the Nations League, as well as the Euro 2024 and World Cup Qualifiers for 2024-2026. Though his efforts can be classified as rather uneventful, he occasionally stirs the net, lighting up the stage with goals. Here's hoping he has some more tricks up his sleeve.
