Alright, then. Let's talk about good old Vaclav Cerny, shall we? Born on a crisp Autumn day on 17 October 1997. He hails from the Czech Republic, and is a bit of a maverick on the field. Primarily plays as a forward and a right winger for Rangers. That's Scottish Rangers, not a park ranger, just so we're clear. He measures at a rather average 5ft 10in (1.78m) tall and carries a weight of about 10st 9lb (68kg). He's not the beefiest of lads, I'll give you that. The number 18 he wears on his back is perhaps the heaviest thing on him.
Proudly sporting the colours of his home country, Cerny has also represented the Czech Republic national team. Sources like Transfermarkt rate his current market value at approximately €7.00m, which by the way, converts to around £6million. His contract with Rangers is tightening around his neck with each passing day, due to expire on 30 June 2025. Then maybe we'll get to see yet another club added to his growing list of past employers.
Having spent some of his formative years at 1. FK Příbram in the National Football League in Czech Republic, he then made his way to Ajax in the Netherlands for a modest sum of around £650k. During his time there, he made an ever-so-impressive 16 appearances and scored 1 goal across three seasons.
After what one can only assume was a banner spell at Ajax, Černý decided to hop across to FC Utrecht, also in the Netherlands, for a fee of around £680k. The change in scenery must've done him some good as he made 13 league appearances for them in one season.
Perhaps feeling nostalgic for those carefree days of minimal goal scoring, Černy decided to spend some time on loan at FC Twente, again in the Netherlands. Here he was given the chance to grace the pitch 66 times over three seasons and even managed to put the ball in the net 20 times. Kudos. Upon concluding his loan term, he made a permanent move to Twente for a cool £860k.
Hoping to curry wurst and favour, he transferred from Twente to German side, Wolfsburg, for a staggering £7.7 million. He made 22 appearances and scored four goals during the 2023-2024 season, before venturing north to our beloved Rangers. Currently, he's made six appearances and scored three goals in the Premiership in Scotland.
Aside from his club performances, he's also participated in a few notable tournaments, including the League Cup, Euro qualifiers, Champions League qualifiers, Nations League and the Europa League. He's got four starts for his national team and three goals from four starts and one appearance as a substitute. A less green player than the grass he graces, Černy seems to have kicked a ball around every pitch this side of Timbuktu. Now if only his prolific transfer rate could match his scoring rate...
